Music Therapy
As a profession, "Music Therapy is the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program." (American Music Therapy Association). Our music therapists work with people seeking help to craft goals to guide their music therapy services. We use the elements of music to help clients create change in their life. Some goals have been improving academic skills, cognitive skills, social skills, communication skills, motor skills, emotional expression, and personal development.
The music therapy process begins with an assessment of a person's strengths and needs. The music therapist develops a treatment plan to help the person achieve their goals. The music therapy meeting or the session will include music and discussion produced between the music therapist and client. Specific music experiences are designed to help work towards a person's goals and may include:
Our music therapists have worked with a variety of people seeking music therapy. Those people have included persons who have experienced abuse, traumas, anxiety, and depression. We have assisted people on the autism spectrum, people with dementia, and young people with developmental delays (Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, etc.). We've provided music therapy to people with rehabilitative needs (after a stroke or brain injury) and people in medical treatment for Cancers, heart disease, and respiratory disease.
